آتش جان گدا جوع گداستجوع سلطان ملک و ملت را فناست
English translation
The beggar's hunger consumes his own soul, but the Sultan's hunger destroys state and religion.

This is couplet 33 of 34 in “در بیان اینکہ مقصد حیات مسلم، اعلای کلمة اللہ است و جہاد، اگر محرک آن جوع الارض باشد در مذہب اسلام حرام است” (Showing that the purpose of the Muslim's life is to exalt the Word of Allah, and that the Jih«d (was against unbelievers), if it be prompted by land-hunger, is unlawful in the religion of Islam), from Allama Muhammad Iqbal's Persian book Asrar-e-Khudi (اسرارِ خودی), published in 1915.
