خطاب بہ اقوام سرحد
آب و گل را آرزو آدم کندآرزو ما را ز خود محرم کند
English translation
It is this turns water and clay, the physical self; into a human being.
It is that which acquaints us with ourselves.

آرزو ہی مشت خاک کو آدم بناتی ہے، آرزو ہی ہمیں اپنے آپ سے آگاہ کرتی ہے۔

This is couplet 35 of 38 in “خطاب بہ اقوام سرحد” (Address to the Frontier Tribes) in the section The Traveller, from Allama Muhammad Iqbal's Persian book Pas Chih Bayad Kard (پس چہ بائد کرد اے اقوامِ شرق), published in 1936.
