اگر خواہی حیات اندر خطر زی

غزالی با غزالی درد دل گفتازین پس در حرم گیرم کنامی

Said one gazelle to another, ‘I will take shelter in the harem from now on:

بصحرا صید بندان در کمین اندبکام آہو ان صبحی نہ شامی

For there are hunters at large in the wild, and there is no peace here for a gazelle.

امان از فتنۂ صیاد خواھمدلی ز اندیشہ ہا آزاد خواھم

From fear of hunters I want to be free. O how I long for some security.’

رفیقش گفت اے یار خردمنداگر خواہی حیات اندر خطر زی

His friend replied, ‘Live dangerously, my wise friend, if it is life you truly seek.

دمادم خویشتن را بر فسان زنز تیغ پاک گوھر تیز تر زی

Like a sword of fine mettle hurl yourself upon the whetting-stone; stay sharp thereby.

خطر تاب و توان را امتحان استعیار ممکنات جسم و جان است

For danger brings out what is best in you: It is the touchstone of all that is true.’
