خفتگان خاک سے استفسار

مہر روشن چھپ گیا، اٹھی نقاب روئے شامشانہ ہستی پہ ہے بکھرا ہوا گیسوئے شام

The bright sun is hidden; the night shows its face. The night's hair is spread on shoulders of the earth.

یہ سیہ پوشی کی تیاری کس کے غم میں ہےمحفل قدرت مگر خورشید کے ماتم میں ہے

This black dress is preparation for some one's mourning; perhaps the Nature's assemblage for the sun is mourning.

کر رہا ہے آسماں جادو لب گفتار پرساحر شب کی نظر ہے دیدہ بیدار پر

The sky is casting a spell over the talking lip; the night's magician is watching the awakened eye.

غوطہ زن دریاے خاموشی میں ہے موج ہواہاں، مگر اک دور سے آتی ہے آواز درا

The wind current is submerged in the river of silence; however, the tolling bell's sound comes from the distance.

دل کہ ہے بے تابی الفت میں دنیا سے نفورکھنچ لایا ہے مجھے ہنگامہ عالم سے دور

Heart which in love's turmoil is evading the world; has dragged me here far from the maddening crowd.

منظر حرماں نصیبی کا تماشائی ہوں میںہم نشین خفتگان کنج تنہائی ہوں میں

I am the spectator of the spectacle of disappointments; I am the associate of those sleeping in solitude's corner.

تھم ذرا بے تابی دل! بیٹھ جانے دے مجھےاور اس بستی پہ چار آ نسو گرانے دے مجھے

O My restlessness! Wait and let me rest awhile and let me shed a few tears at this habitation.

اے مے غفلت کے سر مستو، کہاں رہتے ہو تمکچھ کہو اس دیس کی آ خر، جہاں رہتے ہو تم

وہ بھی حیرت خانہ امروز و فردا ہے کوئی؟اور پیکار عناصر کا تماشا ہے کوئی؟

Is that world also one of prevarication? Is that world also one of denizens' struggle?

آدمی واں بھی حصار غم میں ہے محصور کیا؟اس ولا یت میں بھی ہے انساں کا دل مجبور کیا؟

Is Man engulfed by sorrow in that land also? Is Man's heart suppressed and helpless in that land also?

واں بھی جل مرتا ہے سوز شمع پر پروانہ کیا؟اس چمن میں بھی گل و بلبل کا ہے افسانہ کیا؟

Does the moth burn itself in candle's love in that land also? Does the tale of flower and nightingale exist in that garden also?

یاں تو اک مصرع میں پہلو سے نکل جاتا ہے دلشعر کی گر می سے کیا واں بھی پگل جاتاہے دل؟

In this world a single hemistich perturbs the heart: Does there also the warmth of verse soften the heart?

رشتہ و پیوند یاں کے جان کا آزار ہیںاس گلستاں میں بھی کیا ایسے نکیلے خار ہیں؟

This world's relations and alliances life's woes are: Are similar sharp thorns present in that garden also?

اس جہاں میں اک معیشت اور سو افتاد ہےروح کیا اس دیس میں اس فکر سے آزاد ہے؟

The daily bread and a million calamities this world has: Does the soul freedom from anxieties in that world has?

کیا وہاں بجلی بھی ہے، دہقاں بھی ہے، خرمن بھی ہے؟قافلے والے بھی ہیں، اندیشہ رہزن بھی ہے؟

Are the thunder, the farmer, the harvest there also? Are the caravan and the robber's fear there also?

تنکے چنتے ہیں و ہاں بھی آ شیاں کے واسطے؟خشت و گل کی فکر ہوتی ہے مکاں کے واسطے؟

Do birds collect bits of straw for nests there also? Is the search for bricks and clay for house there also?

واں بھی انساں اپنی اصلیت سے بیگانے ہیں کیا؟امتیاز ملت و آئیں کے دیوانے ہیں کیا؟

Are the humans unaware of their reality there also? Are they after nations' and customs' discrimination there also?

واں بھی کیا فریاد بلبل پر چمن روتا نہیں؟اس جہاں کی طرح واں بھی درد دل ہوتا نہیں؟

Does garden not cry at the nightingale's wail there also? Like this world is there no sympathy in that world also?

باغ ہے فردوس یا اک منزل آرام ہے؟یا رخ بے پردہ حسن ازل کا نام ہے؟

Does the Paradise a garden or a restful mansion constitute? Or does the Eternal Beauty's Unveiled Face it constitute?

کیا جہنم معصیت سوزی کی اک ترکیب ہے؟آگ کے شعلوں میں پنہاں مقصد تاویب ہے؟

Does hell a method of burning away sins constitute? Or it in flames of fire a way of discipline constitute?

کیا عوض رفتار کے اس دیس میں پرواز ہے؟موت کہتے ہیں جسے اہل زمیں، کیا راز ہے؟

Has walking given way to speedy flying in that world? What is the secret of what is called death by denizens of this world?

اضطراب دل کا ساماں یاں کی ہست و بود ہےعلم انساں اس ولایت میں بھی کیا محدود ہے؟

Life eases the heart's restlessness in this world: Is human knowledge also restricted in that world?

دید سے تسکین پاتا ہے دل مہجور بھی؟'لن ترانی' کہہ رہے ہیں یا وہاں کے طور بھی؟

Does the separated heart get satisfaction by sight there also? Are ‘Lan Tarani’ saying the Toor of that land also?
(This alludes to the Holy Qur’an 7:142-143. It means that Man is unable to see God in this material world and prophets are no exception to this.)

جستجو میں ہے وہاں بھی روح کو آرام کیا؟واں بھی انساں ہے قتیل ذوق استفہام کیا؟

Does the soul get solace in longing there also? Is man a victim of desire to learn there also?

آہ! وہ کشور بھی تاریکی سے کیا معمور ہے؟یا محبت کی تجلی سے سراپا نور ہے؟

Ah! Is that land also filled with darkness? Or with Love's light is completely illuminated?

تم بتا دو راز جو اس گنبد گرداں میں ہےموت اک چبھتا ہوا کانٹا دل انساں میں ہے

Tell us what the secret under this rotating dome is. Death a pricking sharp thorn in the human breast is.
