مرگ ہا اندر فنون بندگیمن چہ گویم از فسون بندگی

Several forms of death are hidden in the arts of slavery, what I can say about hypnotics of slavery.

نغمۂ او خالی از نار حیاتہمچو سیل افتد بہ دیوار حیات

Its songs are devoid of warmth of life; it over-runs a wall (if life) like a spate of flash flood.

چون دل او تیرہ سیمای غلامپست چون طبعش نواہای غلام

Slave’s forehead (appearance) is dark like his heart; notes of his music are (insipid) like his spirit.

از دل افسردۂ او سوز رفتذوق فردا لذت امروز رفت

Fire of life in his frozen (disappointed) heart is extinguished; he can neither relish his present nor think of better future.

از نے او آشکارا راز اومرگ یک شہر است اندر ساز او

His lute (melody) betrays his inner-self; his musical instruments carriy death of entire city.

ناتوان و زار می سازد ترااز جہان بیزار می سازد ترا

It (his song or melody) makes you (the listener) weak and sick; and (the listener) gets fed up of the world.

چشم او را اشک پیہم سرمہ ایستتا توانے بر نوای او مایست

Perpetual flow of tears is his eyes’ surmah (black stone like metal ground into powder which in this part of the world people apply in eyes to beautify and clean them); as far possible do not pay attention to his flute.

الحذر این نغمۂ موت است و بسنیستی در کسوت صوت است و بس

Beware! His is the song of death; it is has nothing but death in the sound (of his song).

تشنہ کامی، این حرم بی زمزم استدر بم و زیرش ہلاک آدم است

If you are thirsty, his Haram has no Zamzam; death of mankind is hidden in lows and highs of his voice.

سوز دل از دل برد غم میدہدزہر اندر ساغر جم می دہد

It deprives the heart of fire (of ambitions) and makes it sad; it pours poison into the glass of wine of Jamshaid (promising nothing but death).

غم دو قسم است اے برادر گوش کنشعلۂ ما را چراغ ہوش کن

Listen my brother! Grief is of two kinds; take my flame to lighten your candle of awareness.

یک غم است آن غم کہ آدم را خوردآن غم دیگر کہ ہر غم را خورد

One kind of grief eats up the man; the other kind is that eats up all types of worries.

آن غم دیگر کہ ما را ھمدم استجان ما از صحبت او بی غم است

Second type of grief is our best companion (friend); in its company one gets rid of all the worries.

اندرو ہنگامہ ہای غرب و شرقبحر و در وی جملہ موجودات غرق

In this type of worry one has hustle of east and west; it is like the sea in which all the beings are submerged.

چون نشیمن می کند اندر دلیدل ازو گردد یم بی ساحلی

When this (kind of grief) nestles in a heart; it turns that heart into sea without shores.

بندگی از سر جان نا آگہی استزان غم دیگر سرود او تہی است

Because slavery is unaware of secrets of life; so its song is devoid of second type of grief.

من نمیگویم کہ آہنگش خطاستبیوہ زن را اینچنین شیون رواست

I do not say that that its notes are wrong; but its (ups and downs) suit the song of a widow.

نغمہ باید تند رو مانند سیلتا برد از دل غمان را خیل خیل

Song should be forceful, like flash flood; so that it washes away hordes of grief (camping) in the heart.

نغمہ می باید جنون پروردہ ئےآتشے در خون و دل حل کردہ ئی

It should be fostered by madness (extreme feeling) of True Love; it must inflame fire in the blood of the heart.

از نم او شعلہ پروردن توانخامشی را جزو او کردن توان

Moisture (of his eyes; the tears) adds to the flames of fire; so that silence be made part of it.

می شناسی در سرود است آن مقامکاندرو بی حرف می روید کلام

Do you know! There is a stage in melody which when reached one converses without using words.

نغمۂ روشن چراغ فطرت استمعنی او نقشبند صورت است

If melody is lit by True Love, it becomes candle of Nature; it imparts shape to its meanings.

اصل معنی را ندانم از کجاستصورتش پیدا و با ما آشناست

I do not know the essence of meanings, but its shape is apparent and we are well acquainted with it.

نغمہ گر معنی ندارد مردہ ایستسوز او از آتش افسردہ ایست

If song is devoid of meaning then it is dead (worthless) even if some warmth of life is left in it; that is nothing more than remaining warmth in ashes left-over after fire.

راز معنی مرشد رومی گشودفکر من بر آستانش در سجود

My spiritual mentor Rumi disclosed secrets of the meanings; my thought (in trance) prostrates on the mat of his door.

معنی آن باشد کہ بستاند ترابی نیاز از نقش گرداند ترا

The meaning is that which liberates you from yourself; that which makes you free of all obligations of any shape, or physical form.

معنی آن نبود کہ کور و کر کندمرد را بر نقش عاشق تر کند

The meaning is not that turns you blind and deaf; one that absorbs a person into mere (physical) form.

مطرب ما جلوۂ معنی ندیددل بصورت بست و از معنی رمید

Our musician did not pay attention to the meaning (essence); they are fond of lyrics (words) not the meanings.
