در بیان اینکہ حیات خودی

زندگانے را بقا از مدعا ستکاروانش را درا از مدعا ست

Life is preserved by purpose: Because of the goal its caravan-bell tinkles.

زندگی در جستجو پوشیدہ استاصل او در رزو پوشیدہ است

Life is latent in seeking, its origin is hidden in desire.

آرزو را در دل خود زندہ دارتا نگردد مشت خاک تو مزار

Keep desire alive in thy heart, Lest thy little dust become a tomb.

آرزو جان جہان رنگ و بوستفطرت ہر شی امین رزو ست

Desire is the soul of this world of hue and scent, the nature of everything is a storehouse of desire.

از تمنا رقص دل در سینہ ہاسینہ ہا از تاب او ئینہ ہا

Desire sets the heart dancing in the breast, and by its glow the breast is made bright as a mirror.

طاقت پرواز بخشد خاک راخضر باشد موسی ادراک را

It gives to earth the power of soaring; it is a Khizr to the Moses of perception.

دل ز سوز آرزو گیرد حیاتغیر حق میرد چو او گیرد حیات

From the flame of desire the heart takes life and when it takes life, all dies that is not true.

چون ز تخلیق تمنا باز ماندشہپرش بشکست و از پرواز ماند

When it refrains from forming desires, its pinion breaks and it cannot soar.

آرزو ہنگامہ آرای خودیموج بیتابے ز دریای خودی

Desire keeps the self in perpetual uproar: It is a restless wave of the self's sea.

آرزو صید مقاصد را کمنددفتر افعال را شیرازہ بند

Desire is a noose for hunting ideals, a binder of the book of deeds.

زندہ را نفی تمنا مردہ کردشعلہ را نقصان سوز افسردہ کرد

Negation of desire is death to the living, even as absence of heat extinguishes the flame.

چیست اصل دیدۂ بیدار مابست صورت لذت دیدار ما

What is the source of our wakeful eye? Our delight in seeing hath taken visible shape.

کبک پا از شوخی رفتار یافتبلبل از سعی نوا منقار یافت

The partridge's leg is derived from the elegance of its gait; the nightingale's beak from its endeavour to sing.

نے برون از نیستان آباد شدنغمہ از زندان او آزاد شد

Away from the seed-bed, the reed became happy: The music was released from its prison.

عقل ندرت کوش و گردون تاز چیستہیچ میدانی کہ این اعجاز چیست

What is the essence of the mind that strives after new discoveries and scales the heavens? Knowest thou what works this miracle?

زندگی سرمایہ دار از آرزوستعقل از زائیدگان بطن اوست

'Tis desire that enriches Life and the mind is a child of its womb.

چیست نظم قوم و آئین و رسومچیست راز تازگیہای علوم

What are social organisation, customs and laws? What is the secret of the novelties of science?

آرزوئی کو بزور خود شکستسر ز دل بیرون زد و صورت بہ بست

A desire which realised itself by its own strength; and burst forth from the heart and took shape.

دست و دندان و دماغ و چشم و گوشفکر و تخییل و شعور و یاد و ہوش

Hand, teeth, brain, eye, and ear, thought, imagination, feeling, memory, and understanding –

زندگی مرکب چو در جنگاہ باختبہر حفظ خویش این آلات ساخت

All these are weapons devised by Life for self-preservation in its ceaseless struggle.

آگہی از علم و فن مقصود نیستغنچہ و گل از چمن مقصود نیست

The object of science and art is not knowledge; the object of the garden is not the bud and the flower.

علم از سامان حفظ زندگی استعلم از اسباب تقویم خودی است

Science is an instrument for the preservation of Life; science is a means of invigorating the self.

علم و فن از پیش خیزان حیاتعلم و فن از خانہ زادان حیات

Science and art are servants of Life, slaves born and bred in its house.

اے از راز زندگی بیگانہ، خیزاز شراب مقصدی مستانہ خیز

Rise, O thou who art strange to Life 's mystery, rise intoxicated with the wine of an ideal:

مقصدے مثل سحر تابندہ ئیماسوی را آتش سوزندہ ئی

An ideal shining as the dawn, a blazing fire to all that is other than God;

مقصدی از آسمان بالاتریدلربائے دلستانی دلبری

An ideal higher than Heaven – Winning, captivating, enchanting men's hearts.

باطل دیرینہ را غارتگریفتنہ در جیبی سراپا محشری

A destroyer of ancient falsehood, fraught with turmoil, and embodiment of the Last Day.

ما ز تخلیق مقاصد زندہ ایماز شعاع آرزو تابندہ ایم

We live by forming ideals, we glow with the sunbeams of desire!
