در معنی اینکہ در زمانۂ انحطاط تقلید از اجتہاد اولی تراست

عہد حاضر فتنہ ہا زیر سر استطبع ناپروای او آفت گر است

The present age has many tumults hid beneath its head; its restless temperament swarms with disorders.

بزم اقوام کہن برھم ازوشاخسار زندگی بے نم ازو

The society of ancient nations in these modern times,
is in confusion; sapless hangs life’s bough.

جلوہ اش ما را ز ما بیگانہ کردساز ما را از نوا بیگانہ کرد

The glamour and the glitter of our days have made us strangers to our very selves, and robbed our instrument of melody;

از دل ما آتش دیرینہ بردنور و نار لاالہ از سینہ برد

Filched from our heart its pristine fire, and dimmed, within our breast the radiance and the flame there is no god but God.

مضمحل گردد چو تقویم حیاتملت از تقلید می گیرد ثبات

Whene’er decay destroys the balanced temperament of life,
then the community may look to find stability in strict conformity.

راہ آبا رو کہ این جمعیت استمعنی تقلید ضبط ملت است

Go thou thy fathers’ road, for therein lies tranquility; conformity connotes the holding fast of the community.

در خزان اے بے نصیب از برگ و باراز شجر مگسل بہ امید بھار

In time of Autumn, thou who lackest leaf alike and fruit,
break never from the tree, hoping that spring may come.

بحر گم کردی زیان اندیش باشحافظ جوی کم آب خویش باش

Since thou hast lost the sea, be prudent, lest a greater loss, befall thee; the more carefully preserve thy own thin rivulet;

شاید از سیل قہستان برخوریباز در آغوش طوفان پروری

For it my hap some mountain torrent shall replenish thee, and thou once more be tossed upon the breast of the redeeming tempest.

پیکرت دارد اگر جان بصیرعبرت از احوال اسرائیل گیر

If thy flesh is yet possessed of a discerning eye, take warning from the Israelitish case;

گرم و سرد روزگار او نگرسختی جان نزار او نگر

Consider well their variable fate, mow hot, now cold; regard the obduracy, the hardness of their spare and tenuous soul.

خون گران سیر است در رگہای اوسنگ صد دہلیز و یک سیمای او

Sluggishly flows the blood within their veins, their furrowed brow sore smitten on the stones of porticoes a hundred.

پنجہ ی گردون چو انگورش فشردیادگار موسے و ہارون نمرد

Though heaven’s grip hath pressed and squeezed their grape, the memory of Moses and of Aaron liveth yet;

از نوای آتشینش رفت سوزلیکن اندر سینہ دم دارد ہنوز

And though their ardent song hath lost its flame, still palpitates the breath within their breast.

زانکہ چون جمعیتش ازہم شکستجز براہ رفتگان محمل نبست

For when the fabric of their nationhood was rent asunder, still they laboured on tokeep the highroad of their forefathers.

اے پریشان محفل دیرینہ اتمرد شمع زندگی در سینہ ات

O thou whose ancient concourse is dispersed, within whose breast the lamp of life is out;

نقش بر دل معنی توحید کنچارہ ی کار خود از تقلید کن

Grave on thy heart the truth of Unity, and in conformity essay to mend the ruin of thy fortune.

اجتہاد اندر زمان انحطاطقوم را برہم ہمی پیچد بساط

In the time of decadence, to seek to exercise, the speculative judgment of the mind completes the people’s havoc finally;

ز اجتہاد عالمان کم نظراقتدا بر رفتگان محفوظ تر

Salvation lieth less in following the blinkered pedant’s dictum, being found humble imitation of the past.

عقل آبایت ہوس فرسودہ نیستکار پاکان از غرض آلودہ نیست

Caprice corrupted not thy fathers’ brain; the labour of the pious was unsoiled by interested motive;

فکر شان ریسد ہمی باریک ترورعشان با مصطفی نزدیک تر

Finer far the thread of thought their meditation wove, closer to the Prophet’s (S.A.W.) way conformed their self-denial.

ذوق جعفر کاوش رازی نماندآبروی ملت تازی نماند

Jaafar’s raptured view and Razi’s patient delving are no more; departed is the glory that adorned the Arab nation;

تنگ بر ما رہگذار دین شد استہر لئیمی راز دار دین شد است

Narrow shrunk for us the defile of the Faith, whose mysteries every impostor boasteth to possess.

اے کہ از اسرار دین بیگانہ ئیبا یک آئین ساز اگر فرزانہ ئی

Thou, who art stranger to the secret truths of Faith, if thou art wise, accord thyself with one sound Law;

من شنیدستم ز نباض حیاتاختلاف تست مقراض حیات

For I have heard it said by those who take and know the pulse of Life, thy contrariety severs Life’s veins.

از یک آئینی مسلمان زندہ استپیکر ملت ز قرآن زندہ است

The Muslim lives by following one Law; the body of our Faith’s community throbs vital to the Word of the Quran.

ما ھمہ خاک و دل آگاہ اوستاعتصامش کن کہ حبل اللہ اوست

All earth we are; that is our conscient heart; hold firm to its protection, since it is the Cord of God.

چون گہر در رشتہ ی او سفتہ شوورنہ مانند غبار آشفتہ شو

Upon its sacred thread gem-like be safely strung, or otherwise be scattered, as the dust upon the wind.
